Samsung Display unveiled two concepts called Rollable Flex and Flex In & Out. The latest developments in display technology provide new hints about devices following foldable phones. With these two concept screen designs, Samsung has started an era for a rollable phone.
Samsung Rollable Flex and Flex In & Out
Samsung showcased Rollable Flex and Flex In & Out at the SID Display Week event in Los Angeles. According to the company, these concepts will shape the future of tablets, laptops, and smartphones. Samsung Display also introduced the world’s first mobile OLED panel with a built-in fingerprint reader and heart rate sensor.
The Rollable Flex screen can be unrolled along an “O” shaped axis. After unrolling, it can expand from 49mm (1.9 inches) to 254.4mm (10.1 inches), making large-sized screens portable.
The other concept, Flex In & Out, allows phones to fold inward or outward multiple times. This screen technology, which enables running multiple applications in a folded form, will greatly expand the usability of phones.
In addition to Rollable Flex and Flex In & Out, Samsung Display showcased another screen concept called Flex Hybrid. This new model combines folding and sliding screens simultaneously. For example, Flex Solo allows the screen to expand from 13 inches to 17 inches.
While the new displays showcased at SID Display Week are impressive, Samsung avoided sharing any release dates. It should be noted that these are purely concept works, and it is uncertain which model they will be used in initially.
